The Catholic University of America and The Gale Group are working jointly to produce a completely revised and updated edition of the New Catholic Encyclopedia to be released in September, 2002.

Like the biblical scribe who brings from his storehouse of knowledge both the new and the old, this millennial edition  of the New Catholic Encyclopedia will incorporate material from the current fifteen-volume edition copyrighted in 1967 and the four supplements published in 1974, 1979, 1989, and 1996. Entries that have withstood the test of time are being edited to include the latest information and research, and all the bibliographies are being made current. Hundreds of new entries are planned. For all practical purposes, it will be an entirely new edition intended to serve as a comprehensive and authoritative work of reference reporting on the movements and interests that have shaped Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular over two millennia.

The new edition will contain upward of 12,000 articles. Like the old, the new edition will consist of fifteen volumes--fourteen volumes of text and a volume with comprehensive index, tables, and auxiliary material. In addition to providing information on the doctrine, organization, and history of Christianity over the centuries, it includes information about persons, institutions, cultural phenomena, religions, philosophies, scientific developments, and social movements that have affected the Catholic Church from within and without.

As in the original edition,  The Catholic University of America  is responsible for the editorial direction and content. The editorial board for the revised edition includes a core of  established scholars of the faculty of The Catholic University as well as other nationally recognized scholars. David McGonagle, director of The Catholic University Press, manages the project for the University in collaboration with The Gale Group, and Berard L. Marthaler, OFMConv., coordinates the editorial team of writers, advisors, and researchers.
